In Malaysia, kenaf (Hibiscus Cannabinus L) as an alternative cop for animal feed and fibre production has received much media attention in the last couple of years. Fast track research on kenaf as an animal feed and non-wood fibre production was initiated as a result of the keen interest shown by the former prime Minister. Tun Dr.Mahathir Mohamad in the multifarious possibilities of
commercially exploitable derived products from this crop. MARDI together with other goverment agencies was assigned to undertake this task of R & D programmed. From this pioneering research, promissing kenaf varieties and accessions were identified for promotion and ultilization in the country.
Subsequent agronomic and seed production trials together with pulping and bloomposite experimentation in the last few years revealed the favorable characteristics of kenaf as a raw material for animal feed, security paper making and bloomposite material for the building and automotive industries.
Looking at this global potential on kenaf as a new world economic commodities, shahwira agro industries proposed to start its new kenaf plantation and processing plant to produce bio-composite kenef componant or future based product at about 500 acres waste land at Summerset Resort for her first initial steps into this new industry.
